Quantum Digital has equipped a critical mass of close to 100 digital cinemas in the UK for the satellite reception of live broadcasts. The number of sites is growing monthly, scheduled to reach 150 sites by Q4 2009. All these cinemas have DCI standard digital projection and server equipment.
All dishes are commercial 1.2m antennas which can also be used by film distributors to send a Digital Cinema Package (DCP) via satellite to multiple cinemas in a single transmission. At the receive site, the Central Library we provide allows the Exhibitor to receive the DCP to be automatically uploaded onto the Exhibitor’s playback server.
Sending a DCP via satellite means the cost of physical hard drive distribution to each individual cinema is no longer required. Given the scale of cinemas now able to receive a DCP via satellite, the savings for each nationwide digital theatrical release becomes substantial.
Meanwhile for the Exhibitor, there is no being 'blinded by science' and no catch, just a simple, inexpensive and secure Library solution combining extra storage for digital movies with a new, flexible way to receive a DCP via satellite.
Your Digital Intermediate can send us the JPEG2000 encoded and encrypted DCP via fibre or on hard drive and we can transmit it in a single, cost-effective broadcast to however many of the satellite-enabled digital cinemas the “print” is scheduled to play at. This can include the KDM, as well as digital advertising and trailers.
Your secure, protected DCP uses the satellite network for transport only, posing no possible security or technical breach to the DCP itself. As with hard drive distribution, the DCP is encrypted and can run only on the servers authorised after the local ingest of the KDM.
